Corporate Wellness – Do We Need Healthier Companies?


Today is all about healthy companies. Is your company healthy? No, we don’t mean (just) your business figures. We think there is more to it to be a healthy company.

 

miamo: It seems as if most companies never learn.

Louis:  What do you mean?

miamo: Louis: Modern psychology, neuroscience and sociology offer their findings in all sorts of books since 20 years at least. Employees in leading roles are send to respective workshops, new tools such as psychometric tests used etc. etc. – but not much has changed, really. Pressure, anxiety and stress are on the rise and lead to the new phenomenon “burnout” or more severe health conditions.

 

Louis: What do you suggest is to be done?

miamo: Companies need to become healthier. Not only financially sustainable  but also healthier.

Corporate wellness is an upcoming term. So far mainly fitness consultants offer their services to the corporate world but there is more to it. Wellness is a merger of both, well-being and fitness.

People not only need to be fit but physically healthy and mentally balanced if they are to be good leaders, innovators, inventors, analysts as well as successful sales and marketing specialists.

 

Louis:     Isn’t that a no-brainer? Doesn’t everybody know that?

miamo:   Well, you would think so. But plans that focus on job satisfaction,  happiness of staff, space for creativity and more self-organisation seem  not to be on the agenda of most top managements.

When businesses strive for growth they have in mind growth in size, sales and profit rather than growth in personal development of their workforce although the latter is the premise for the first.

 

Louis: What do you think are the most pressing steps a company should do?

miamo:
1) Change their view on the most precious resource they have human beings. Stop calling them FTEs (full time employees) or similar. They are co-workers; they are part of the whole.

2) Create an environment in which people can give their best. Stop ordering change and restructuring top down. Let people participate, allow more self-organisation.

3) Change the promotion system. Don’t try to turn specialists into leaders and vice versa.

4) Train your managers to become better bosses and good leaders.

 

Louis: What happens if they don’t?

miamo: Eventually they will lose out; maybe even disappear from the scene. To stay on top they will need to stay creative, innovative and maybe even able to reinvent themselves from time to time.

This means they need highly educated, highly motivated employees. Management needs to change attitude. The old models of remuneration and promotion will need to change. The almost collapse of the banking industry, the irrational distribution of wealth made people think, younger people at least. Greed is in the pillory.

Money will soon no longer be a true value.Meaning is the new desire.
